Humility

Remember thou art mortal. Only God sees all. Only God knows all. Only God controls all. We mere mortals are finite creatures with all the limitations that entails. Regardless of how remarkable we may be as individual men, there will always be things beyond us. To be humble is to acknowledge this immutable Truth.

Only an impious fool believes he is above reproach. He flaunts his unfounded ego and blinds himself to reality with simple childlike narratives. His hubris leads him from one disaster to another as he refuses to take accountability for his shortcomings and learn from his mistakes. In his arrogance he blames others, but in truth he punishes himself. He could set himself on the right path at any time by embracing humility and asking himself what he did wrong, but all too often the fool stubbornly refuses to change.

Wise men on the other hand embrace humility. They understand their limitations and admit their faults. They accept their finite nature. They embrace their mistakes as the learning experiences they are. They are always considering the new information and perspectives the world is forever presenting to all of us. This means they spend their whole lives accumulating knowledge, uncovering hidden truths, and building an understanding of our ever-changing world. They understand they will never know everything, and thus they are constantly improving themselves and the world around them.

Since nothing is ever certain in this imperfect world, humility is essential in all things. We can never have all the information required to make perfect decisions. We can never truly know what the people around us are thinking. We can never truly control other people. We are mortals, and we must remember our limitations.

It is true that part of wisdom is taking the time to make the best possible decision with the information available to us. However, delaying a choice to gather and consider more information is itself a decision. Other people will continue to act while we consider our options, and the consequences of this delay can be just as severe as a bad decision.

Humility is especially important in serious cases where the consequences of a misstep can be catastrophic. No amount of mortal wisdom can guarantee we avoid disaster. What appears to be the best possible choice may actually be the worst. Wise men understand this and move forward regardless, because they understand the inevitability of uncertainty in our incomprehensibly complex world. Only God can ever be truly perfect, so all we can do is make the best guess we can and pray for luck.
